Have you updated your WordPress to version 2.8.4 yet?

Don’t!

I upgraded my MCBS Consulting blog to the newest version and it seems to be causing problems with any placement of Pictures in posts. With version 2.8.3 & prior, if I inserted an image to align left, it would align left along side the text. Same thing if I put in on the right. No problems.

It is also causing problems with Incoming Links. The error mentions a bad call from SimplePie. Since I am using that to call the recent posts with excerpts, it may not be a problem for others. Especially if you are not using the Simple Pie plugin.

However, the Insert Images is a big problem, not only for me, but anyone who likes to use Pictures to enhance a post to add a little visual something for their readers.

I don’t plan on Upgrading any of my other Blogs until either I or they figure out what the problem is with Version 2.8.4

How about you? Have you run into this problem with the Upgrade? Do you have any fixes?

If I come across anything regarding the problem, rest assured, I will let you know. FYI, this Blog is still on 2.8.3, so Insert Images still works here.

Copyright © Working at Home on the Internet - Do Not Scrape This Feed!

Prelude

Way back in the olden days of WordPress, version 2.5x I think it was, if you wanted to respond to a comment from one of your readers, you would have to actually go to the post itself in order to have a conversation with the reader.

Each and every comment, spread over numerous posts had to be responded to in the same manner. Go to the post & type your comment. Go to the next post & comment. Ad Infinitum until you answered each comment from every commentor.

Then came along Better Comments Manager a plugin by Keith Dsouza. I could actually answer every comment from Within the Administration page of WordPress. They could be threaded, individual or multiple responses to the individuals of the community. Convient for me since I could do it all in the background and not have to access each post to have a conversation.

Lo and Behold, WordPress in versions 2.7x got the idea and ran with it, making it a part of the internal commenting system.

I naturally deactivated Keith’s plugin since I thought it wouldn’t be needed any longer. Then I delected it.

Interlude

All was well until the fateful day of the Upgrade to WordPress 2.8.

Most everything worked, even the Theme still looked good and all the Widgets worked just fine. Only one catch.

I couldn’t respond to comments in the Administration Page as I could before in v 2.7x. I asked people in the know, people who have dealt with this type of situation and I asked for advice. None of them were having problems with their “Reply” to comments in the Admin page. It seemed I was the only one.

The thing seems to be that I am running a Parent/Child theme. A Framework theme that others build upon in order to customize a theme to change the look and feel of a Blog.

Well, needless to say, I am not going to change my theme at this point just for the convience of being able to answer what few comments I get from the Admin Page. That’s when I remembered Keith’s Better Comments Manager plugin and started looking high and low for it.

End

I finally found it in some old zip file I had used way back when to install it in the first place. So, if you are having problems with your theme interface with comments through the Administration Page of WordPress 2.8, you may want to try the Better Comments Manager plugin by Keith Dsouza. It works for me.

Moral

If something works, don’t try to fix it unless something goes wrong. Then be sure to have access to older versions of what Did Work, just in case the fix is broken too.

Copyright © Working at Home on the Internet - Do Not Scrape This Feed!

*Editors Note: Major problems with the site today, so this is a reproduction of the original post of this morning.

I’ve installed WordPress 2.8 & other than a couple of small adjusments, not too many problems.

Except for one!

Granted, I don’t get too many comments, but I loved the feature that allowed me to Reply to Comments from within the Administration Page. It worked perfectly when I had WP 2.7.1 but now? NOT!

For some reason it just takes me down to the bottom of the page instead of giving me a Respond Box as it did in the previous version. Now, if I need to respond to Readeers Comments, I need to go to the post itself and reply. For each and every comment, no matter which post it happens to be on.

What a Pain!

They give you something that is useful (that I had a plugin for in WP2.5 and now is extinct) and take it away. I went to the WP Forum, FAQ page and even went through the code and can’t find where they made the change or why.

Has anyone else run into this problem? I tried deactivating various plugins related to commenting and still it doesn’t work.

Oh, and as an afterthought, I preposted the Blog Carnival as usual on Thrusday night and for some strange reason it posted 2 hours late and gave me a message that it posted late and I had to go in and resave the post for it to show live on the site???

And now a short vid for your entertainment…

Let me know if you have figured out what the problem is or if I find it first, I’ll let you know.

I don’t know about you, but I am getting a little bored with the Andreas Theme. It’s been around for a couple of years now and I have tweaked and twisted and redesigned it about as much as I feel can be done.

Every change that is done with add-ons, widgets, advertisements, buttons and bows has to be changed every time I do an upgrade. At the very least, I have to make sure everything works & have a backup ready if anything goes wrong with the upgrade.

It’s Time for a Change

I have been playing with WordPress 2.7 Beta for a little while now and feel it is time to upgrade once again. This is a good thing, I really like the new back-end of WP in the newest version. I won’t go into all the improvements they have made, there are plenty of reviews out there already.

I will mention that part of the new wave of doing things is the automatic updates they offer now and the direction seems to be going towards Framework Based Themes. Basically, you pick a layout you like, similar to the old Sandbox theme, which has all the standard codes in place for the framework you like.

Then you can either set up your own style sheet or pick one of the child themes that are offered and tweak that the way you want it to look. And you know me, I LOVE TWEAKING.

Anyway, I picked the Thematic Framework as a starting point. It offers a lot of nice widgets and other good stuff (sorry, it’s late as I’m writing this), and some good child themes to work with.

It won’t be done by the New Year as I had intended, but I think you may just like the new look. I’ll let you know when it’s ready, I promise.

Copyright © Working at Home on the Internet - Do Not Scrape This Feed!
As you can see by the Screen Capture of the recent poll, most people who use WordPress really don’t like the latest upgrade. And I didn’t even cast MY No vote, so the percentage is actually higher than this shows.

The other side of the coin is that Only One Third of the voters actually like the newest version.

If you would like to get an idea of how people really feel about the changes you may want to take a peak at the comments on the actual poll post. I hope WordPress listens to the people who actually are using the platform before too many people migrate somewhere else.
