Self Motivation: My Technique

101800340_3c71e7a9d9_m.jpg One of the most difficult things to deal with when working at home is Self Motivation. Losing clients who can’t afford my services, not getting any new clients because it’s cheaper to try to do it themselves, the economy, the season changing to darkness for more hours than daylight.

Sounds depressing, right?

Well it is, if you let it be and it can bring you down to the point of inaction.

What I am doing to try to combat any possible downward spiral is going back. Back to basics that is. Written gold, my original game (business) plan. Trying to think of new ways to market my services and utilize some of the old proven things that have worked for me in the past.

The first of which is writing this post to get my commitment to myself, my business and of course all of you in writing, posted online for everyone to see.

Here’s the beginning of the plan. It will be added to, subtracted from and revised as things progress, but not ignored.

  • I plan on posting on WAHI at least on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. More if possible.
  • MCBS will be updated with new posts on Wednesdays and Fridays with the occasional posts when there is something to share about a client’s success or I come across a new feature that could be useful to DIY types.
  • Clear out and organize my work area.
  • Test some new programs that could be beneficial to other WAH’ers.
  • Redesign layouts of both blogs and/or look into new themes.

As I said earlier, this is just the beginning. There are a lot more things I’m thinking of implementing to reinvigorate the consulting business and continue blogging about the experience. Successes and Failures, you will get to hear it all. Hopefully, I don’t bore you with some of the more mundane stuff, but if it’s part of the Work at Home Experience it’ll probably show up here.

How do you Self Motivate? Share with us. I’m sure I’m not the only one who could use the help in this area.

What Do Creating Frankenstein and Building a Small Business Have in Common?

If you saw yesterday’s post (if you want to call it that), there was a picture of a scared, hold on for his life, beer drinking skeleton just sitting on the patio with a look of fear on his face.

    badday1.jpg

Sure, the financial market is on a roller-coaster ride at the present time and there are plenty of things to worry about with your 401(k) and maybe even your job itself.

This post isn’t about the worries of keeping your job, but if you are in a position of change and if you are thinking of getting out of the rat-race and want to start your own business, there are some things that relate to the building of that monster that may help in that pursuit.

When K brought home a cute little bony head that made some scary sounds and thought it would make a nice little addition to the Halloween decorations, I thought it a needed a little more. It was so small and puny and looked so forlorne all by itself on the step. I knew I could make something a bit cooler, scarier and just a bit more life-like (or dead-like) to entertain the Trick-or-Treaters.

    The Building of the Monster

    • Firstly, I set the head on a small step ladder we have and rarely use. Starts to get a little more defined “body”, a skeleton if you will. There is something to work with.
    • Secondly, I grab one of my old work cut off vests, but it had no arms. It needed more!
    • Thirdly, what do I do with just a torso? Give it some legs, of course. An old worn out pair of jeans with no bottom should do the job.
    • Fourthly, it still had no arms, needed an old work shirt. No feet at the end of the legs, needs my former work boots. Hands? Old work gloves.

    The Building of Your Business

    • Firstly, start with your strength. Are you good at writing? Fixing computers? How about just what you really, really like doing. If you have a talent or expertise in any field, it could be well worth starting a business, but you have to have a solid base, just like the bony little head of “Dead Joe”.
    • Secondly, you have to have a vision. Even though you have a solid base on the what you do is, you need to be able to envision where you want to go with your business. See what your end result COULD be.
    • Thirdly, You need to be able to adapt to whatever the situation calls for. Whether it be adding employees, equipment, or buckling down and doing it yourself, you will have to give your business some legs.
    • Fourthly, look to the future. You already had a vision of what your business might be, now look at what it CAN be. Since you started with a skeleton and built the body piece by piece, you are in control of what the end result will look like. It is up to you.

Thoughts? How did you start your business? or better yet… How do you plan on starting your business?

My Take On SOBCon08: It Takes Passion to be Successful

THINKER.jpg I’ve been pondering for a couple of days about what SOBCon 08 meant to me and what I could share with you about the experience of being among Professional and Amature Bloggers and how that could relate to Business.

All of the presenters were quite informative and full of information that could be used in a Home Business, Online or Offline. But, the One Thing that they all shared and every one of the participants was full of is…

    PASSION for What They Do!

Saturday was basically for the nuts and bolts of how to use Blogging as a Tool to enhance your business. Still the Passion of people like Wendy Piersall (and all the rest) came through in the way they talked and how they shared Their experiences to try to help the rest of us! (Wendy actually inspired Brian Clark of CopyBlogger to write a post about how he ended up where he is today)

The same Passion came through at the get togethers both before and after the Main Event. Although lots of great information was shooting in all directions, My biggest take-away was some of the casual conversation that had nothing to do with Business.

These People are Passionate about their Businesses, their Families, their Cities, their Pet Projects. They are Real people, just like you and me and they Love what they Do. If you had a question, they had an answer. If they didn’t have the answer, they would help you find the answer. It’s almost like we always knew each other, friends helping friends and sharing because that’s what friends do.

So, I’d like to introduce you to My Friends…

This post was going to be more about Networking and how that would relate to building a Small Business, but PASSION for what you do is At Least as Important. And if you have the Passion for Your Business, Networking will come naturally.

Do you have the Passion to make Your Business a Success?

(Before you ask, Yes I Did use Liz’s list)
