Am I a WAHM?

mom_working_homeWhen I started these weekly posts I did some research on Working At Home Moms (WAHM’s) .  It did not take me long to realize that I don’t know if I am a WAHM.  Yes – I work at home, and yes – I am a mom.  But WAHM’s seem to be full time mom’s.  They work doing the caregiving, childrearing etc. but they don’t necessarily have a “Job”, or should I say a professional occupation.  (I know I might insult a few people here – and believe me when I say that I KNOW that being a full time mom is the HARDEST job anyone can have!)

I am writing about this because what I realized is that I don’t “fit in”.  I am not a full time mom and I do not have a full time job outside the home.  I have clients that I need to see and speak with.  I have to have a certain amount of time during the day to make calls and see clients.  Not all of my work can be handled at night.

Okay – so maybe I am a WAHM.  Then I have to say that WAHM’s (not just me) don’t fit in.  A lot of people say that we have the best of both worlds.  But sometimes it is not the best.  On the business side we can’t go to a lot of the meetings that we want, meet people at the times that are convenient for them, or get needed work done at the times it is most needed.   On the personal side a lot of the classes that we want the kids to go to are during that day or on the days that we work and have the kids in daycare.  All of this can really add to our frustrations.

So what is a WAHM to do?

  1. Be friends with other WAHM’s.
  2. Get on social network’s so that you can at least talk to other WAHM’s if you don’t know any in real life.
  3. Just figure out what works best for you and don’t worry what other full timers are doing. (Keep in mind most WAHMs say they pursued this mix because they felt it was the best solution for their families)

I did not have any friends in real life who worked part time so I needed to just deal with it or try to meet other WAHM’s online.  As time has gone on and my children aged just a bit – things have become a lot easier.  It has been frustrating at times – but I really do feel like I have the best of both worlds.

How do you feel about being a WAHM?

Brooke, I think a WAHM is one who stays home with the kids WHILE working in some sort of professional capacity. Whether the mom does those two at the same time, that’s up to her! I personally work while my kids are at home (to some extent). It’s perfect for me because I can contribute financially, yet still be available to take my kids to school and activities, help them with homework, and then get some work done at night. Luckily with my webtop I can just hop on and get some work done whenever and wherever I need to – even while waiting for my daughter to get out of her musical theater class.

Thank you for the definition. Well I am sort of a WAHM. My kids are at daycare somedays – but they are too young to work when they are at home. That would be cool if I could get more done when they are home.

I’m totally a WAHM. And it’s hard to prioritize house work, work work and watching/spending time with the very demanding Miss Chattyshoes (my almost 2 year old) while Mr. Busypants (6 year old with autism) is away at school.

I feel like if I’m on top of things with housework, I’m behind on grading(I teach part time at three different colleges, which essentially adds up to FT). If I’m doing great with my writing (I’m a writer too), then I’m gaining weight because I don’t take the time to exercise.

This is such a crazed lifestyle. Thanks for putting on such a great site!

Oooh I so know how you feel! Lately I have been thinking that I would be a better mom if I was not pulled in so many different directions. (But I LOVE to work) Oh the dilemma!

I took a glance at your blog and will read more later when my kids re not pulling at me!

Take a look back here tomorrow and on every Wednesday to see my latest posts! Thanks so much for reading!
