People say that I have the best of both worlds because I can work part time and also enjoy my kids at home. Are they crazy? I would not get anything done with my kids at home! Yeah – I could when they were 0-6 months old, but who wants to work then?
So my kiddos are in preschool 3 days per week. This has been a perfect situation for me for the past two years. But I have to say that sometimes I need to work when they are home with me. So what does one do?
I have heard all kinds of ideas, but many are for kids that are 7 or older. The thing that works the best for me is to have them play in their own rooms while I make that phone call or finish that work.
The thing to remember is that little kids can’t be in one place for too long. Give them a craft, send them to their room to play or read, but whatever you do don’t have them stay for too long. A little bit here and a little bit there will take you a long way!

Hey Brooke,
Welcome to the Family.
Great insight, I’m not sure I would be able to handle kids around all day without help.
Thank you Joe! It is quite a challenge to work with the kids at home – and I have to be honest and say that I am not always great at it at all. I am learning new techniques, and things about me and the kids every day. But hopefully I can reveal a nugget or two about what I have learned!
I know working from home with kids will be a challenge for me when the day comes. Have you ever tried a babysitting swap with another work-from-home mom?
That is a great idea Jenny! I have done that a few times – and will continue to do that. Unfortunately it is not working to be a regular thing.
Brooke,
Excellent advice. I will put it to good use when I have children. I have experienced similar distractions when I am around my niece. I move to different rooms in the house with my laptop while attempting to keep her occupied
That’s proved to be the best strategy.

Thank you Ryan – I agree that moving around with them can be good too. My office is right by where they play – so that proves to work pretty well!
Brooke, this is a great topic. It’s very difficult to work at home with kids who want to be outside or doing an activity. One solution I’ve found is to head to the local library or museum, anywhere with computers. I can then access all of my files, data, and software on my GoEverywhere webtop without dragging my laptop around. I get my work done while the kids are reading books or checking out exhibits. (Although this may only work for older children!)
