As I mentioned in the WAHI Weekend Wrap-up Video this past Friday, I am trying to become more (re)active on LinkedIn, so I asked this question publicly to see what the answers would be like and how involved they would be…
In your opinion, what is the best way to be more active on LinkedIn to build business relationships?
I’ve been inactive on LinkedIn for way too long and I want become a more active part of the community.

You will get out of LinkedIn what you put into it, thus:
- Complete your profile so others can know you better.
- Use the Outlook Toolbar to LinkIn your existing contacts to grow your network.
- Play around with “Account and Settings” to see what is best for you.
- ALWAYS personalize an invitation to reflect where/when/how you met or the common ground or reason you wish to connect.
- Get active in Q&A so that folks understand you better. This may lead to actual business if your expertise shines through. The best way to increase your business by using LinkedIn is to actually participate and join the community, connecting to people, making regular and pertinent posts, answers and comments, connecting WITH people who would make good customers.
ENJOY!!

The best way to work LI is to make your self invaluable to all those around you. Answering questions, helping others solve problems, and helping them get connected are all good ways to do this.
Remember to NETWORK, not prospect, sell, or advertise or you will destroy your LI reputation and it will be very hard to recover.
At my site below are 3 FREE tips reports on LI networking — and you will receive other information (FREE) shortly there after.

Hi Joe
Questions and Answers
10 and 100 respectively monthly.Groups join 40
Be active in 10 weekly
The rest post monthly.Search for schools, interests etc.
Find a group you wish to visit daily with a little humour included. Part of the process is to feel as if you belong, if you don’t you’ll find reasons to do other stuff. Linkedin and social networking requires commitment and value being given out…. before you can expect anything back.
Interlink all your social networking sites…. if you are not already networking elsewhere, join ecademy at least, it’ll get you up the search engines for a a very small monthly fee.
Best wishes, Simon

In addition to what’s already been said:
When your profile is properly fleshed out (looks pretty good now), LI’s database will help you find former colleagues using the companies/dates. Send a personalized–or at least customized to the group–invitation, not boilerplate.
It’s not just about number of Q&As or Groups, though that helps; be sure to follow up with those who answer your Qs (and rate them when the Q closes) so you can “meet” other LI members virtually. Similarly, find Groups that are fairly active and on-topic and participate.
I think the Events feature is under-appreciated. I discovered an event in my area and attended. Was more informational than networking, but interesting and I did meet a couple of new people. (Because once in a while we all need to step away from the computer….)
Whether you are an open, closed, or selective networker, put a summary of your networking preferences in your profile under Contact Settings so others know if and how you prefer to connect with fellow LI members.

Hi Joe,
Stay involved in the Q&A, if you can, and be consistent…
I’ve got a Sunday Question I ask each week so that is one place people can routinely check in and a place for me to meet new people as well. The consistency has been an avenue to get to know people better over time. A little network grows from just that.
Use your imagination and figure out what will work for you with the amount of time you’ve got. There are a lot of tremendous folks on LI so hang around and get to know them!
My best,

I have taken all of these responses to heart and have implemented most (especially the Q&A thingy). Do you agree with their assessments? Can you add anything that was missed?
And YES, they have all become contacts on LinkedIn, so it seems the advice is really good.
