If you have been reading the Blog for a while, you will know that I bought a laptop last year. This is a good thing.
I took it with me to SOBCon 08, so I was able to keep up with my online life with no problem. It also affords me the luxury of working out on the front deck at home. At least when the weather is nice.
Now, this story isn’t really about the advantages of having a laptop (although it helps) but about having the ability to interact with other people.
When I was tied to my desktop and had to work inside in my little office, I had very little interaction with anyone outside the house. That has since changed because people now know what I do while working at home. We talk, they ask computer questions, I answer.
Even the Mailman has asked for and gotten advice. ![]()
For the most part, they are easy fixes they can do themselves. But on the other hand, when they run into bigger problems like a virus or something that infects their computers or if they want to set up a blog or website, I get the call.
Since I have talked to and helped them as a friend and neighbor, they have trust in my abilities to solve their computer problems. So, when the need arises, they call me even before the help line… as customers. Now that is cool.
Moral
It is good to build community online, but don’t forget the face to face relationships you can nurture offline, they can help you build your business in your own neighborhood.
