You could have tried loading up a Linux Live-CD (Runs on RAM, not your hard drive) and attempted to mount your hard drive, and extract any important files onto a networked computer. Backups are still important, and we all have to learn the hard way at least once! Time to start rebuilding! :) There are a few things you could have done further rather than taking a loss.
