If you use Wordpress as a Blogging Platform for your Work at Home Business, you undoubtedly use some Plug-ins to help ease the daily grind and enhance the experience of your readers, visitors and friends. I thought I would share the ones I have found to be the most useful to me.

  • Akismet 2.0 Akismet checks your comments against the Akismet web service to see if they look like spam or not. You need a WordPress.com API key to use it. You can review the spam it catches under “Comments.” To show off your Akismet stats just put <?php akismet_counter(); ?> in your template. By Matt Mullenweg.
  • bdp-comments 1.0.2
List recent comments and posts - hacked from the WordPress core By Bryan Palmer (palmer.bryan@gmail.com).
  • BDP Referral Tracker 1.0.6 Referral tracker - Provide links to referring domains, each with statistics on the number of hits By Brian Palmer (bryan@ozpolitics.info).
  • DoFollow 2.2 Disable the “nofollow” tagging for comments. Timeout using comment age inspired by Christoph Rummel. Configuration: Options » DoFollow. By Kimmo Suominen.
  • Feedburner Feed Replacement 2.2 Forwards all feed traffic to Feedburner while letting through some important User-Agents. By Steve Smith.
  • Filosofo Uncheck Default Category 1.2 Unchecks the default category when you select another. By Austin Matzko.
  • In Series 2.2.0 Provides navigation controls for next/previous within a connected series of posts By Travis Snoozy.
  • RS Discuss 0.5.2 The ultimate featherweight forum system for WordPress. By Rob Sargant.
  • SimpleTags 2.0 Allows you to create a list of Technorati tags at the bottom of your post by providing a comma separated list of tags between the [tags] tags. You can use it with any blogging tool/method, not just when posting from WordPress itself (doesn’t use custom fields). Supports multiple words within tags. Also allows in-post tagging of words by enclosing them in [tag] tags. Works with the WYSIWYG editor. By Broobles.
  • Subscribe To Comments 1.5 Allows users(readers) to recieve notifications of new comments that are posted after their own. By Jennifer - Scriptygoddess.
  • Text Link Ads 3.0.1 Really Simple Web/RSS Advertising For Personal or Commercial Use By Justin Klemm & Matthew Drouin & Alex King.
  • Time Capsule 1.0.3 Creates a timecapsule that displays entries from the past. Created by Aaron Brazell on behalf of ProBlogger.net By Aaron Brazell.
  • What Would Seth Godin Do 1.2 Displays a custom welcome message to new visitors By Richard K Miller
  • WordPress Database Backup 1.8 On-demand backup of your WordPress database. By Scott Merrill.
  • WP-ContactForm 1.4.3 WP Contact Form is a drop in form for users to contact you. It can be implemented on a page or a post. It currently works with WordPress 2.0+ By Ryan Duff.
  • WP-Polls 2.14 Adds an AJAX poll system to your WordPress blog. You can also easily add a poll into your WordPress’s blog post/page. By GaMerZ.

If there are any Plug-ins you have found that are useful to the Blogger who uses WordPress for Home Business, please share them with us.

PS. I’m looking for a “Broken Link Checker” Plug-in. With Well Over 800 posts and the way I spread the Link Love, I need help finding broken links.

Update: I have since uninstalled BDP Referral Tracker because it Consumes Resources like a Bear in a Salmon Stream.

    1. Great list. I use several of those too. I hadn’t seen the In Series one before, though.

    2. Hey Stephanie,
Thanks, I really do use them all and find them very valuable in running an online business.
In Series is a good way to keep a series on the front page. If you notice, I have a list of series I have written in the sidebar (under recent posts). Keeps things fresh. :-)

    3. Hey Joe - try 404-notifier for the broken link checker. I love it…

I also prefer Spam Karma (by Dr. Dave) over Akismet.

I also prefer “customizable post listings” over the bdp one you mentioned - CPL lets you show a lot more in multiple locations.

Don’t forget the related posts plugin…

And when all else fails - check out the plugins list at wordpress.org. :)

    4. Hey Lara,
I knew I could depend on you to come up with other useful plugins that are great for the work at homer. :-)
So far, Akismet hasn’t let me down, so I’ll leave it as is for now. But I Do have to try the 404 notifier for the broken links. (got a link for it?)
I have to check out some of the others you recommend, I know they must be good if you use them.
