Sounds of Silence

by Simon and Garfunkel

Hello darkness, my old friend
I’ve come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence

In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone
‘Neath the halo of a street lamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence

And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never share
And no one dared
Disturb the sound of silence

“Fools”, said I, “You do not know
Silence like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you”
But my words, like silent raindrops fell
And echoed
In the wells of silence

And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said, “The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls”
And whispered in the sounds of silence

33 fell silent yesterday.

    1. hear me, I beg!

Some people are trying to make you believe that we should all observe one day of silence, no blogging and entire day because of what happened in Virginia. Even if the cause seems to sound noble I have to urge the the people of the cyberworld to walk away from this and not let yourselves be deceived by those people.

Silence is already present in our daily life. People don’t talk to each other, we are, most of us afraid of showing our feelings to the world around us. People don’t talk about mental disease, it’s just not something you can talk about neither do people talk about suicide!

I urge you to, not add an other day of silence in your life. Silence is easy, talking is hard. You want to pay your respect to the victims of Virginia? the victims of violence all around the world? I beg you, don’t go running to the easy option, one that will not, in no way at all, make this kind of violence drop.

On April 30th 2007 I beg of you, for once in your life, TALK about it!

    2. Hey Mr Ed,
I disagree with you, but respect your right to say it.
However, I think this is a good way to respect the victims because they died needlessly.
(BTW I sent you an e-mail regarding your link removal)

    3. Don’t worry being a thinker on my own and having the ability to make up my own mind I and use to censorship.

So where is your day of silence for the victims of the present war? Where is your day of silence for all the children being forced to work until they drop dead in south Africa? Where is your day of silence for all the Chinese being tortured and killed because they stand up against the dictatorship? Or is all of this not trendy enough to deserve a day of silence?

One last question before you delete my comment. If you were one of those victim you really would want the people of an entire nation to be silent? To not face the real problem? Sure, you’ll observe a day of silence because the establishment told you it was the thing to do, but when exactly will you take a day to talk about it?

      Input by Mister EDgAr [h.] | April 17, 2007 @ 1:34 pm

    4. Mr Ed,

I will not delete this or the last comment. I thought the link to a dead pigeon was an insult and took it as such.

As far as all the other victims, I feel for them as well. I also still remember 9/11 and 7/7 and the Train Bombings in Spain.

All are senseless and should be observed by each of us in our own way. Mine is a day of silence for this latest bit of inhumanity.

Taking a life is never good.

(My best friend committed suicide many years ago, and I grieved then because it was senseless, but he didn’t take anyone with him except his demons.)

    5. I have nothing against the “day of silence” although I find it very hypocrite and self centered [You’ll feel good about yourself, right?]

violence is not inhuman is actually one of the most human thing!

      Input by Mister EDgAr [h.] | April 17, 2007 @ 1:56 pm

    6. Ya know Ed,
Yes, it makes me feel a little better and hope the victims and their families understand that and accept it for what it is… RESPECT.
It is unfortunate that you are 100% correct about the humanity thing. That’s really SAD and I wish it weren’t true, but it is.

      Input by Joe | April 17, 2007 @ 2:03 pm

    7. I know I will sound self-centered saying this but I feel a little weird observing a day of silence on my birthday. Why April 30th? I personally never “got” or “understood” the moment or day of silence concept. I am a Christian and I’m already praying for those affected by these events. No need to wait till April 30th. My gym however is hold a blood drive on that day and I’m planning on giving blood and as squemish as I am I may not feel like doing much else.

      Input by Patrick | April 17, 2007 @ 2:39 pm

    8. Hey Patrick,
As I said to Ed, that’s the way I show respect for the victims.
Not everyone feels or reacts the same in such situations, some pray, some don’t react at all and still others react negatively.
      To each their own.
The point of the “moment” of silence is to show the unity against such sensless acts, even if we didn’t know the victims personally.

      Input by Joe | April 17, 2007 @ 2:55 pm

    9. Oh, and Patrick,
      HAPPY pre-BIRTHDAY!

      Input by Joe | April 17, 2007 @ 2:57 pm

    10. Thank you so much Patrick for proving my point!!

“I feel a little weird observing a day of silence on my birthday. Why April 30th?”

Oh man I love this! You sir are amazing! See, what did I told you, sure people will make sacrifice and take “some” action but not if it’ll disturbed their schedule. Amazing, isn’t it?!

Joe, how about showing unity for those who die in Virginia and all the of other victims of fire arm by supporting groups that are trying, so hard, to disarm America? I mean, your day of silence is cute and very trendy but what will you told the future victims of fire arm?

      Input by Mister EDgAR [H.] | April 17, 2007 @ 3:40 pm

    11. Ed,
I’m not quite sure what your point is.
A moment or day of silence is about respect. Not a political statement about gun control or supporting disarming the US.
      It is what it is.
These tragedies may or may not be avoided in the future, but I for one have some respect for those who just died needlessly.

      Input by Joe | April 17, 2007 @ 4:05 pm

    12. Your statement let me believe that you have nothing for or against people walking around with guns, that you don’t bother yourself with what should or not be done and then you add it is about respect? That’s just terrible and obviously you won’t see what is so terrible about it..

I’m tired, I’ve already preached way beyond my capability so I will retire myself and hope that the human race won’t keep at being it’s own predator and that one day people will realize that they are not alone in the world..

Have a nice day of silence if it’s all it takes..

      Input by Mister EDgAR [H.] | April 17, 2007 @ 4:21 pm

    13. Ed,

Thanks for your view on the subject. I think we were talking about 2 different things.

To me, the day of silence is just about respect. Not about whether or not there should be gun laws.

I personally think if they enforced the ones on the books, things would be better. And if they put limits on ownership and possession and defined the difference between the two, there would be less gun violence.

I live outside Philly and at the rate the city is going, there won’t be anyone left to vote in the next election.

Thanks for stopping by and you are always welcome to voice your opinion here (on topic please ;-) ).

    16. I want to apologize for my stupid comment earlier. Sometimes the initial reaction is not the best one and often can be the worst one. My heart does go out to those affected by this tragedy and my prayers are truly with them. It seems that lately I will go out of my way to avoid bad news or think about bad stuff. Every night on the news I am hearing about war, child molestors, shootings, bad car wrecks and my wife and I both have lately been quickly switching over to comedies when the news starts to come on. I normally fancy myself a news hound and like to keep up with the times. My initial reaction should be prayer and not running away. I had to deal with some severe anxiety issues not long after 9/11 and to this day it’s a struggle in how I deal with stuff of this nature. Once again forgive me for my orginal caulous remark,

      Input by Patrick | April 18, 2007 @ 5:36 pm

    17. Hey Patrick,

No problem. You said what was on your mind and expressed how you felt. Nothing wrong with that. :-)

We all really do handle things differently. I’m sure you know about my Mom right before Christmas (when someone said Merry Christmas, I almost took their head off) and Pop right after my Birthday (same reaction).

I regret saying some of those things to the people who were trying to make me feel better, but I know they understand.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, then and now. ;-)

    18. In all the suffering,
      In all the pain,
      In all the hate,
      In all the world

      There is still life,

      Cherish the life you have,
      Cherish the love you feel,

      Prove them wrong,
      Prove me wrong,

      Live,
but never forget that you are not alone.
