It’s Not My Fault: Passing on a Meme

 mailduck.jpg

I really just don’t understand the point of a “meme”. I’m not really sure I know WHAT a “Meme” is. Other than a little fun and spreading some Link Love, what purpose do they serve? I got into the Z-listers “meme” fairly early on and actually got a few Hundred links from it. But Most of them were just Z-listers linking to other Z-listers for the sake of getting links from Z-listers.

None of the links served as a source of any value to current or potential readers. It didn’t lead to any New Readers or Visitors or RSS Subscribers. Just Empty Links that raised my T-rati Rating a little. I realize that added interlinking is good for SEO, but I want Readers to Visit for what little I can offer in the way of advice and insight into the Work at Home Business World.

All that being said, I was tagged by Terry Starbucker for yet another “Meme”. The “My Media Diet Meme“. Since it could be construed as Working at Home on the Internet related (and I like and respect Terry), I’ll participate. Don’t get me wrong, I like to share links and provide added value for my readers, but personally I don’t think Most “Memes” provide much in the form of Value to the Reader.

Ok, now for my “Diet”:

  • Browser… Internet Explorer 7. I like to use IE7 because it gives me the option of using tabs (I’m a multitasker), and I can subscribe right to someone’s RSS feed through the toolbar, no need for a separate aggregator. I do have a copy of FireFox, but I use that mainly just to get a feel for what FF users see if I make changes to my template or add a feature.
  • E-Mail… I use Outlook Express for almost every email account I have. I can get a preview of the incoming/outgoing email without having to open each one individually. Frankly, since I have 5 business accounts with my domain, 2 with Hotmail and 2 with Yahoo, I don’t know how I could do without it. (I used to have 2 with AOHell, but I Really dislike them.)
  • Radio… WMMR Philadelphia (when I listen in the car), Virgin Radio Classic Rock (London, online), Classic Gold (London, online). All are Live Radio, Real People, Real Time. I like Live Radio, not the “Net” radio. By the way, I’m in the US, not the UK.
  • TeleVision… SciFi Channel, Discovery Channel, History Channel, PBS and occasionally TCM (Classic Movies).
  • Podcasts… Not too many, I think I’ve only listened to 2-3 so far.
  • Communication… My Cell phone. No Skype, IM (used to use MSN, but not too much anymore) and no Blackberry.
  • Magazines/Newspapers… Wired is the only Mag I subscribe to. The Philadelphia Inquirer is delivered daily, I sit on the front patio with my coffee and read (mostly) the front section, even in the winter, to start my day. I have MSNBC sent to my email to get headlines, and if I find something interesting, I’ll click it.

There ya go. That’s my Media Diet, pretty much on a daily basis.

For the sake of the “Meme” I pass it to Liz, Carolyn, Steve, Rick and Martin. Sorry guys, they made me do it.

Hey Joe, thank you for your kind words – the feeling is mutual. I did pick you because I thought the meme was relevant to your blog. You didn’t disappoint – interesting insights. All the best!

      Hey Terry,
I only tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.
I thought the reason you taged me was because it would fit with the theme I try to portray. ;-)
      Talk to ya soon.
