Relationship Blogging At Work

 102958490_9ac92f9e86_m.jpg

Everyone who reads this Blog probably knows that I have had a rough time of it lately with a Personal Situation. It’s been a taxing couple of months.

For those of you who are unaware, Mom died on December 13 and Pop just died March 21. 13 weeks to the day.

Rough.

After Mom died, I was going to write about the need to be prepared for the unexpected extended leave from a Home Business. While family matters will take over and give you a different perception as to What’s Important, you still have to keep in mind that Your Business has to keep running, even when you’re not there to manage it.

As time does, it worked its magic little by little and the need to post about it dissipated as the weeks passed until finally I ended up just deleting the post. “It” lost it’s importance to me, everything seemed better so there was no need to keep it around.

Then, Pop died and I ran into the same problem. Not being prepared to keep the Business running while I was away. I had started planning, but never really fully implemented my back-up plan of having posts pre-written in case something happened. There was no way to keep the momentum flowing. Sure I had a couple of posts planned and could use them, but I had nowhere near enough for a full week.

How did I cope?

Over the past year and a half I have tried to build relationships with other Businesses online. Looking for ways to improve traffic, revenue and my presence on the Internet. In doing this, I visited quite a few Blogs, left comments and tried to add to conversations. In visiting these Blogs and Websites, I Did build relationships. They quickly turned into Friendships. Liz Strauss has a name for it “Relationship Blogging“.

While talking to my young niece and describing what I do for a living and how I have friends on the Internet, She said “Uncle Joey, why don’t you call your friends to help you?”. Out of the mouths of babes, huh…

That’s when I decided to call some of my best Online (and now Offline) friends to ask them to cover for me for a couple of days. Without hesitation, each and every one said they would do it gladly and all offered to help as long as I needed it.

So, I would like to Thank…

The Moral of this little story?

This was not an overnight thing. As with any relationship, business or personal, they take time to nurture. Relationships grow and get better with age. Although I needed help to keep the Blog going for business, my Friends did it because they care and are TRUE FRIENDS.

Thanks,

Joe

Firstly Joe, I hope this Easter has been not too bad for you. The first Easter, Passover, Christmas, Hannukah, birthdays etc are always the hardest ones. Those special times when we gather are very hard when we’re immersed in grief and loss.
Your post here captures a big part of the reason why I continue to blog. It’s the relationships I’ve built up with people I may never meet face-to-face but with whom I feel a bond and connection. These include people like Carolyn, Rosa Say, Phil Gerbyshak and all my Joyful Jubilant Learning Network colleagues.
Yes I’m “in” to relationships but it constantly amazes me how strong the connections can be when they’ve been built through blogging. Maybe I’m just attracted to blogs that are written by peoiple with whom I would most likely connect in person anyway!
      Whatever … It works!

      Hey Chris,
Sometimes it takes something like this to find ou who your real friends are.
I think I got lucky, the relationships I have built on the internet have turned into real friendships and I value them highly even though I never met any of them (yet ;-) ).
Hope to see you in Chicago in May (I know Australia is pretty far away) but maybe you could be there virtually?!?
      Thanks,
      Joe
