Sheila began writing part-time while on active duty with the US Navy, and is now enjoying a successful career as a full-time freelance writer, specializing in travel but conversant in a variety of topics.
A certified Navy Master Training Specialist and former Associate Professor of Naval Science at the University of Florida, Sheila is also an enthusiastic and knowledgeable public speaker and teacher.
So, without further adeau, let me introduce to you… Sheila Scarborough
I work from my home as a full-time freelance writer and blogger. My specialties
include travel, NHRA drag racing, food, music, NASCAR and national
security/defense issues. Links to my published clips, “Fast Machines”
motorsports work and my Family Travel blog are on my Web site.Once I retired from the Navy, I knew that I didn’t want a corporate job.
Serving at sea had been too much fun for me to be willing to shift to working
in a cubicle and wearing pantyhose.Life’s too short and too wonderful; do work that you love.
I’ve always liked to write, and after growing up in a Navy family that moved
around, and then moving myself while on active duty, I knew something about
travel and living overseas. It seemed natural to combine those into a career
in travel writing. What I found as I worked to establish myself as a writer was that I shouldn’t
limit myself to travel if a writing topic was compelling. I ended up involved
in motorsports, drag racing and NASCAR because I started out to write an
article about travel to a local drag strip and ended up writing about drag
racing itself. My article for the freelance writing ezine “Absolute Write” details my long and winding road to freelance success.
I love working from home, pounding away on my laptop, but I get so wrapped up
in what I’m doing that I forget about my support responsibilities:Â the dirty
breakfast dishes, laundry, cat litter boxes, dental appointments, weedy
gardens, etc. My husband works full-time as a teacher, so I’m the natural one
to be the Domestic Diva, but I fail miserably.ÂThe “Blog Herald” featured my humor piece How
I Blog and every time I re-read it I marvel that I get anything domestic done
at all.Writing never feels like work, and I can’t stop on weekends or at night; my
husband often reminds me to “put down the ‘crack pipe’ laptop and take a
break!”Heaven knows what I’d do if I lost my Internet connection. More dishes, I
guess.![]()
