Thanks Steve Johnson
for Fixing IE7 Access to My Home Page
I owe a debt of gratitude to Steve Johnson of The Fast Lane. If you can read this and you are using IE7, it is due to the efforts Steve put in yesterday in helping (he did all the work) to resolve the errors I was getting on my own, and it seems everyone elses, Internet Explorer after upgrading to WordPress 2.1.
Even though I had followed the instructions to the installation to the letter, I still encountered some serious problems.
The first and most important problem was an Error that anyone using IE7 received when trying to access the main page. It seemed that the whole page would load and then an error stating that IE couldn’t access the page. Individual pages and single posts had no problems and loaded normally.
Steve found that there is some kind of conflict between the StatCounter javascript and one or more other applications. Once the script for SC was removed, the page would load normally for IE users.
So, at this point I can’t count how many of you are visiting the Main page, but if you go directly to any article individually, I will know you were here.
Other problems I have encountered so far:
The Forum is on hold do to the incompatibility with the Plug-in and WP 2.1
The Unchecker for Categories doesn’t work (actually, there Is No Default category anymore as far as I can tell).
Here’s a Big One, when you try to use Save and Continue using IE7, it is returning the same error I was having yesterday, “cannot access page…”.
I have yet to figure out how to put a Double Space between certain paragraphs, I used to be able to hit return twice and that was it, now, no matter what I do, I end up with a Single space.
There are a lot of smaller things I have encountered and some I haven’t found yet, so…
Is anyone besides me having as many problems with this Upgrade? What problems are you having?
Update: I found that it wasn’t the StatCounter itself that was causing the problem. It was the Combination of StatCounter and CrazyEgg within the same field that was causing the Error.
StatCounter has been re-installed alone in the index.php and CrazyEgg has been moved to the Footer. Both seem to be working according to design specifications at this point.
Update II: WordPress 2.1 Sucks… I can now access the Main page by bringing it up outside of WP. In other words, if I use the address bar, or a link to the Main page to access it . If I try to “view site” through WP I STILL get that stupid Error. I don’t think WP likes StatCounter or IE7 or both. That’s where it keeps Fucking Up…
Yes I am Pissed… I NEED SC and be able to View the Page And have Readers be able to Read the Page… I refuse to accept that WP and IE7 can’t get along. 80% of my readers use Internet Explorer in one version or another.
Sorry for the language, but this is upsetting me more than you would expect.

Thanks, Joe, for the thanks.
I’d tried several combos of the javascripts, but it looks like you hit on the winning combination.

Hey Steve,
Maybe it’s the LOSING combination.
I got your email and I’m going to do a double take on CrazyEgg.
I’ll let you know.
Thanks for all your help.
Joe

Joe, I use StatCounter and just upgraded to WP 2.1 last night with no problems. I’m using the StatCounter For Wordpress plugin which lets me put the code in the footer. It works fine in FF & IE7.
But I don’t use CrazyEgg so I’m not sure what to tell you about that one.
I had a few other issues with my upgrade, mainly with an older version of one of my other plugins that was causing an error message and nothing would load. Disabling the plugin made the problem go away. Then I found the latest version and I was back in business.

Hey Chris,
I’m not having problems with SC at present, but I can’t get CE to work. I’m in contact with Hiten there and he’s looking into it.
I have no idea why, but the more things like WP, IE, Windows etc try to Improve things, The More Things Break!?!
I still can’t get email notification of comments either, so I have to login to see if anyone is talking to me. Boy, I wish sometimes they would just leave well enough alone.

Ah, the price of progress, eh? If everything worked perfectly all the time, what would we have to complain about?

Hey Chris,
(I used to love that soap.)
Yeah, I first went through this when Irish Spring (remember them) changed their forumula for their soap. Them I couldn’t use it because I would break out.
I got my comment notification working, but I need to know if the “follow input on this post” works.
Are you possibly subscribed to comments on this post?
Is it working?
Thanks
