Helping You Run an Internet Home Business

WordPress 2.1 (A Very) Preliminary Review

wplogo.jpg

I upgraded my WordPress from 2.06 to 2.1 last night.

The first Blog I attempted was Joe’s Freeware Finds. Installation was painless. Then I looked at the Blog. I got a syntax error where my Blogroll should have been. That’s not good I thought because I had 3 more Blogs to upgrade.

I tried to figure out the error and couldn’t straighten out the problem, so I disabled the Blogroll in the Sidebar Template. No more error, but no more Blogroll either. I’ll let you know how that one turns out when I can straighten it out.

The next 2 upgraded just fine. The WAH Archive page and the World Politics and the Internet blog went without a hitch. There are not a lot of the plug-ins that I have on the other 2, so there wasn’t much to go wrong.

On this, the Final and Most Important blog, the Upgrade was fairly smooth. As far as the Blogroll, it seems to be just fine. I haven’t seen any problems with it so far.

One thing I did notice, which is fairly important to me is that I am No Longer notified of Comments on the Blog. This has been and still is set to be notified of normal comments and comments waiting for moderation. Neither seems to be working at this point.

At first glance all of the Plug-ins seem to function correctly, but if I check the status of the Forum, it shows an error with the Post Slug. The Slug wasn’t changed, and it still leads to the proper page, but I wonder if it will cause a problem with different posts/pages.

The Uncheck category plug-in works normally and if you see Technorati tags at the end of this post, that plug-in works as intended.

I do like the fact that you can toggle between the WYSIWYG and Code editors. And they FINALLY included a Spell Check in the tool bar. I also like the auto save feature. It works as long as you have a Title for the Post. However, it will Not give you a Preview of the Post unless you manually Save and Continue as before.

As I said earilier, this is a Very Preliminary Review. So, let me know how you like the Newest version of WordPress. Have you run into any problems with Plug-ins? Comment notification? Anything else?

Update: Once you publish your post, you can’t make corrections like page/paragraph modifications. I tried adding page breaks in a few places and it reverts to the original. This was never a problem before, it is now. I even tried changing them in the code and still nothing!?! UD2:I DID find out that if you use the “code” “/code” in the toolbar of the code feature, you will get a page break.

    1. For the Blogroll, find the line of code that calls it and change the “-1″ in the parenthesis to “ID”.

Seems to have worked for me. For some reason, the code has changed and it tries to use that -1 as part of a SQL order call and really fubars it.

    2. Hey Ed,
Thanks, I’ll try that. It seems every time they improve something, something else breaks!?!
Oh, well, I guess we just have to figure it out for ourselves. ;-)
      Thanks,
      Joe

    3. I upgraded Shards yesterday. I haven’t had any comments to see about the email notification yet. What I did notice,

      1. I use the WP-dtree plugin in my sidebar. Now link categories are counted as part of the regular category list. I had to change WP-dtree to not show empty categories (categories with no posts like the link categories).

      2. I thought there was supposed to be an option to export the posts, comments, and categories of a Wordpress blog in a format you could import into another Wordpress blog. The import functionality is there, but not the export functionality.

      3. The tabbed interface between the code editor and rich text editor is nice, but any line break in to code editor carries over as a line break in the rich text editor, even without an html br or p. This is no improvement.

      4. The theme editor isn’t showing all the files for my theme. I usually edit them locally, then upload, but sometimes I don’t. This makes me always have to edit the files that aren’t showing locally.

      5. The actual upgrade went well. All my actual data is functioning properly.

      6. There are supposed to be speed improvements. These I’m really looking forward to seeing.

    4. Hey Rick,
So far, I am really disappointed in the upgrade. It seems to be causing more problems that it’s fixing. :-(
      1. I still am not getting comment notification.
      2. It is extremely difficult to edit a post after it has been posted.
      3. There is less function in the “code” editor than with the old one.

As far as the import/export, you have to save the export to your computer, go to the new installation and use the import function there. I don’t know how well it works, but that’s what the doc says.

I actually had to change themes on the Freeware Finds blog because I lost so much function it wasn’t worth the effort to redo everything.

As for speed, I think they put the damn thing in reverse. ;-)

Oh, well, if we use WP I guess we have to figure it out ourselves. :-(

      Joe

Oh, and I don’t seem to be getting any trackbacks either.

    5. That’s the pits about the Freeware Finds blog.

I still haven’t got any comments, so I can’t say anything about that.

Re the import/export - I know how it’s supposed to work. The thing is, I can’t find anywhere in Wordpress to perform the actual export. Do you know where it is?

    6. FYI - Joe, I got a comment today, and I was notified by email about it.
