Â
Beware: Rant Ahead…
Â
It’s no longer an inconvenience, it’s a problem.Â
Most of you already know that Akismet is eating my comments. Then again, how could you, Because My Comments Don’t Show Anywhere. I left a comment on Successful Blog for Liz, and nothing. I left a comment for Ben on Instigator Blog, again nothing.  The same thing happened to the comment I left on ProBlogger for Darren.
Since last week, I have had problems leaving comments on Any Blog that uses Akismet. That means just about Everyone who has a WordPress Blog. Another problem is that Trackbacks don’t work either since they are part of the comment section of a Blog. I doubt the above links will be noticed by the respective Blogs through Trackbacks. They’ll never know that I linked to them unless someone happens to click the link and it shows in their stats.
Â
Even though I can comment on my Blogs by logging in, I can’t comment anywhere else. That is a problem.
Trackbacks don’t show on other Blogs. That is a problem.
I am considered Spam by Akismet. That is a problem.Â
Â
I did a test on my Blog to see what is causing me to be banned.
I tried commenting (without logging in) with my WAH Email address and the Blog address. No comment, is a problem.
Tried with the WAH Email and the old Blogger Blog address. No comment, is a problem.
How about mcbs Email and this Blog address. No comment, is a problem.
Last try mcbs Email and the Blogger address. Hey I can comment. Still a problem.
The same holds true on All of my WP Blogs. Big problem.
Â
I don’t want to use the old Blogger Blog address. It’s not really active even though I didn’t delete the Blog, I never use it anymore. I also don’t want to have to use the mcbs Email because that is not associated with this Blog. I want to use the Email that goes with the Domain I bought.
Â
I am not sure, but I think that this has something to do with the Email Spammers that have Hijacked my Email from the Domain. But, my Email still works, so I don’t know. It could be the Domain itself that is showing as Spam, so the Email doesn’t work in comments because it is associated with it.
Â
I did as the FAQ on Akismet’s site suggests and De-Spammed my Comments. I have done that for a solid week. I also sent them 2 Emails asking for some help with this problem. As of 5 seconds ago, no answer from them. I am out of options, hence, this Post and Title, maybe I can attract their attention and get an answer on how to fix this that works.
Â
Update: Last night Carolyn asked if I commented on their Blog. I did, and it took. It was still there last night when I signed off for the night.
Today, the Comment Is Missing. If it showed last night, it passed the Spam test. They must have deleted it because it was not a favorable remark. It seems that they don’t like criticism, they will edit it out if they don’t like your opinion.

Hey Joe,
I wonder what would happen if you eliminate Akismet from the equation and do the same tests?

Hey Carolyn,
The problem would be the same. Akismet runs through a common database, so any Blog that uses it will still block my comments etc.
I have to get them to do something in order to be “clean” again.
I’m not too sure on how often they update the “de-spammed” comments from sites, but it has been over a week and I’m still having problems, even with me and Liz, and Ben et al de-spamming them.
It’s up to them…

That last comment only took because I used the MCBS and Blogger things for input.

Just so you know, your comment to Liz this afternoon went through.

The only thing I can think of is the whole stigma of “work at home” with the history of MLM sites and everything around. I mean, some of them even post in the major job classefied sites!
Akismet is meant to “learn”, and is also causing some problems on the wordpress forums from what I’ve read as well (with NOT learning). This might just be a good call to action to the automattic team, because they’ve been ignoring the fact that it’s an issue on the forums, despite many of the moderators pointing it out, time and time again, on the email list.
Seriously - it’s got to be a combo of the phrase “workathome” and your IP address or something…

Something else I just noticed - even Google’s classifying your site like one of those “WAH” type things - look at your ads…
“Stuffing Envelopes”
Try Simple Online Surveys From Home $5 to $75 each, or more. Start Now
“Data Entry Work Reviewed”
Can you make money with Data Entry work from home? Find out now.
“Work At Home Make $25 Hr”
“$25-$150/hr at home.”
“Work From Home,$40/hr”
This is all proof positive that your site itself is being seen as one of those “less than honorable” types - even though we (meaning your readers) all know better, the search engines (and possibly Akismet) do not.

Hey Carolyn,
Thanks. I sent Liz an Email to let her know the comment was there. She “allowed” it, that is the only reason it showed.

Hey Lara,
I have noticed some of the Ads on Adsense that I feel are not exactly a fit to what this Blog is about.
I figured if AdSense sold the Ads, then they were acceptable. Maybe Not.
I have no idea why Akismet is doing what they are doing. It could be what you said, they feel my site is not up to par.
I just want to get it solved. This is a good niche, so I don’t think that it should be considered Spam just because there are Spammers using it to their advantage.
I am at a loss.
Joe

Oh I agree with you 1000% that it’s a good site, it’s a good niche, and the way you’re using it is perfectly acceptable.
But the other kind of sites have been around since the internet began… those types of companies around since forever. It’s a shame, but there’s not much you can do about it, nor should you necessarily.
Maybe go to your adsense and make some eliminations of sorts. Right now, I’m seeing an ad for “tough durable laptops” which is HIGHLY relevant to the true nature of the site. So it’s not 100% down the crapper in terms of ads, but maybe you need to just put up some restrictions or something.
Again, Akismet’s not just bonking you as a spammer, it’s doing it to lots of people in the wp forums who have been members and volunteers there for years. So don’t feel like you’re being singled out for much of anything specific - I was just tossing out possibilities…

Lara,
It just bothers me so much that there is nothing I (or many others) can do about it.
There are some good ads that come through, but some make it look like I’m promoting junk. That I don’t like.
One thing that bothers me so much about Akismet is that they seem to ignore the problem. When I sent Emails regarding my problem, they just don’t answer. I know I’m not the only one, maybe we should all make a stink about it.
I haven’t figured it out yet, and I haven’t gotten an answer from Akismet, so… I guess Limbo is where I’ll stay until they make a decision.

Very much understandable.
Trust me when I tell you that you’re not the only one suffering or complaining or… worse, waiting.
It sucks for sure. I hope things get sorted out soon for you!

Did you try commenting on their blog?
Input by Carolyn Manning | November 27, 2006 @ 7:51 pm
Lara,
I am just hoping for the best at this point. I know that I am not the only one, but sometimes it just feels that way.
Joe

Carolyn,
As a matter of fact, No. Not until you just mentioned it. I just assumed that it wouldn’t take because it hasn’t anywhere else.
I just commented on their blog and It Did Take. With my normal commenting criteria. The only thing is that I was already logged into my site, don’t know if that makes a difference or not.
I doubt they will like the comment I just made, nothing untoward, but not favorable.
Lte’s see if that does anything.
Joe
Thanks for bringing that to my attention, I should have tried that before. :-/

You’re not alone, Joe. It’ll be interesting to see how they respond.
Input by Carolyn Manning | November 27, 2006 @ 9:20 pm
Carolyn,
I just checked their blog, nothing yet. I think it’s going to take some time.
It is really unfortunate that I am not alone. Shame so many others are going through the same thing.

Joe,
I looked at their blog too and it looks like selective comment posting — recent, but selective.
I’m template/theme shopping this evening, but I’ll be back to check on things

Carolyn,
I have no idea why my comment took on their blog, but nowhere else, not even here. I gotta figure this out…
I think you will pick a really nice theme that fits you and your blog. Let me know if you need anything.

Well Joe, right now I need a little sleep. Did a lot of window shopping tonight; decision tomorrow.
I sure do hope this straightens out for you soon. You shouldn’t have to be dealing with it.
See ya in the morning,

I’ll do another update tomorrow, but for some mysterious reason, I can comment again.
No idea why, but I’ll try to find out and let you know.
