Trackbacks are a way of letting another Blogger know that you have written something related to an article of theirs and included a link to them as a reference. Trackbacks show up in the comments of the referenced article linking back to your site with a caption of what you have written.

Using Trackbacks is important for a few reasons:

~~ When you link to another site in an article, it will “ping” the other site in comments on the article that is being linked.  This will serve in letting the other Blogger know that you have linked to them.  They may even stop by to Thank You.

~~ It’s possible that when the other site owner checks out the trackback, if they like what they see, they may link to your Blog.  Maybe even put you in their favorites or BlogRoll.  And if they really like your site, they may become Blog Friends.

~~ People who read the article with the trackback will know that you have written something related to what they are reading, essentially becoming part of the conversation.  They may stop by to see what you have to say about the subject possibly leading to new subscribers.

~~ Search Engines will pick up your link when they crawl the other site.  They will also pick up your outbound link.  This could be an advantage if the other Blog has a higher page rank than your site which could enhance your visibility.

Most Blogging Platforms such as WordPress allow for Trackbacks in your settings.  From my experience with Blogger, they don’t have any way to allow for them, unless they changed something in the past few months.

In essence, Using Trackbacks can help expose your Blog to the readers of the sites you have referenced in your articles.  This could lead to more readers of your work.  The more people that see a link to your site, the more likely someone will visit to see what you have to say.

Do use Trackbacks on your Blog?  Can you add any reasons I might have missed?
