Something that is more of a nuisance than anything else is the Default Category in WordPress. It is always there, usually as “uncategorized” and if you don’t want to use it, you have to Uncheck it.
If you have added some Categories to the List, as most of us do, you have to scroll down just to get to it to click it off.
I came across a simple and very easy to install plug-in by Austin Matzko of Il Filosofo Blog. It works even if you changed the default to “general” as I did, or some other less obtrusive name.

This is the 4 Step process:
Step 1. Download the Zip File
Step 2. Unzip the Zip File
Step 3. Upload the php file to the Plugin Folder (no need to create a sub-folder)
Step 4. Activate the Plug-in

When you write a post, and decide what category it belongs in, just click it. The default will automatically “uncheck”. I know you will scroll down to make sure, but trust me, it works.
Even though the category defaulting to “uncategorized” is no biggie, it is just one of those little irritants that I would rather not deal with. How about you?
