Testing Spell Checkers for WordPress
![]()
As I am sure most of you are aware, I am not the best Speller in the world. When I used Blogger in the past, they did have a spell check function built into their Post Editor. WordPress does not. Why, I don’t know, you would think something like that would be standard.
However, there are some plug-ins that are available for WP users. I did try ieSpell, and I couldn’t get it to work at all. It seems you need to have a Spell Checker in your IE Toolbar in order for it to work.
The second, and the one I am currently using, is Spelling Checker by Brian Dupuis. It is a little different to set up than most plug-ins.
After you do the normal download and unzip, MAKE SURE to Read the Instructions. The only file you upload into the wp-content/plugin Folder is “spell-plugin.php” file. Everything else must be uploaded into a folder you create “spell-plugin” in your wp-content folder. It DOES NOT go in the plugin folder as you might expect. You also have to make sure your permissions are set at 755.
I have yet to see how well it works, but it will be tested with this post. I’ll put an update at the bottom to let you know what happened.
In order to find this and any other plug-in you need, use the link at the bottom of your WordPress/Plugins section.
Update: I keep getting an execution error… It will not even go far enough to look at the words. It stops as soon as it starts.
Update II: I just found out per Coldforged Blog that the Plug-in DOES NOT PLAY WELL WITH WP 2.0 Since I have WP 2.04 at present, I think this explains a lot. He further states that he will upgrade it when he gets around to it…
Unless I find something that works, I’ll just have to continue using the Paperback Dictionary.
