A New Problem with WordPress
Â
The other day I decided to write a post on my PolBlog and ran into a bit of a problem.
I went into the Write Post portion of the administration page. It seemed to load normally, so I started to try writing and at first it wouldn’t take, then it started to accept my input, so I continued to write the post.
When I tried to Save it as a Draft, it wouldn’t take, so I lost the post.
I tried again and noticed that it was loading the /wp-admin/post.php/worldpolitics.workingatnomeinternet.com Home<>bold <>italic <>everything else. So I tried again, and it continued to try to do the same thing.
I tested by trying to Edit a previous post. No problem, and it saved normally. I went back into the Write Post section and had the same problem as before.
I figured that since it looked like it was trying to load the “Home” page, I would delete that to see what happened. Nothing… It was STILL trying to load the same thing.
Next I went to the Host that I run the page on, I couldn’t find anything wrong in the post.php in that directory. I tried a couple of different blocks on how it loaded the page, and nothing worked. So, I decided the only way it could possibly be fixed was to Uninstall the Bad and Reinstall a new version.
Everything, I thought, was backed up. I do profess that all of the time, and I do it quite regularly. However, the backup contained only the basic informaion. Nothing of the Content!
So, now that the new version is installed and I have no way to upload the original content, I am stuck. I tried looking up various posts by the URI, nothing there, I looked to the RSS that did exist, same thing, nothing there.
The only way I can think of to get all of the old posts is by copying them from the Cashed Pages I found on MSN search. It will be a lot of work, but at least I can try to bring the Blog back to where it was before all of these problems.

Anybody know of a way to back up POSTS? Has anyone ever heard of this happening before?

I don’t want this to happen again, especially on the Blog with a years worth of posts.

Joe – That’s some pretty scary stuff. I’m overly paranoid about losing anything so I write all my post offline in a text editor, add links and stuff, then post it and save a copy locally. Overkill I’m sure, but it makes me feel better.
I currently use the admin interface at my host to do weekly backups of the database and the XML migration plug-in to grab a copy of posts and comments in XML format. I believe they intend to have the XML import/export part of the next WP release, but in the mean time, the plug-in is available here:

Here is your backup information that you need. I’ve used it before.

That sucks, Joe.
I’m with Tony on the paranoia. I back up weekly with the plugin built into Wordpress 2, and I write my posts locally using Thingamablog. This lets me set my keep a record of my categories and archives, as well as having a copy of the actual post. I’m going to have to check out the XML plugin.

You might also want to try Performancing for Firefox - works like a dream with WP and allows you to save drafts.
Make sure you’re using the latest version, of course, and definitely use the wp-backup feature!
Good luck, Joe - I know how it feels to lose some good stuff…

Hey guys,
I guess I am just to lazy to write posts offline, then upload them etc. I just go straight for the admin write post thingy.
I made the mistake of trusting in a backup program that I hadn’t tested first.
Believe me, I’m going to try, test, and hopefully find a B/U prog that works for me.
Thanks for all the help, all of you.

Joe - you need Skippy’s wp-cron plugin and SKippy’s wordpress database backup plugin .. and a gmail account. I backup my wordpress and all tables every night at midnite to my gmail account. Works great.
As for the writing part, I also prefer to just go into the wordpress and type in the WRITE boxes .. and just click the SAVE AND CONTINUE button often, and even SAVE just to be sure. I might copy CTRL-C the entire post manually for the larger ones.. but, generally don’t.
Also - have you seen the Evermore plugin? I use it on 100% of my blogs. I set it for 250 words, or 2 paragraphs and it does the ‘more’ automatically. If I want it sooner or later, I just use the ‘more’ where I want the break. If I don’t want any breaks, I use the ‘more’ but change it to ‘nevermore’ … When you click on the more, it also goes to the next line on a clean page.
There used to be a hide/show plugin for wordpress v1.5 by scriptygoddess that just expanded it on the same page ‘as you go’.
// perhaps more on topic to your post …/ The other day I had a situation where when I saved my post, the categories went to the uncategorized default. I then kept editing the post and re-setting the category, but then the title disappeared and my slug filename changed from text to a number. It kept happening about 3 times. I rebooted and then everything worked fine. I still don’t know what happened. But, readers got it in their RSS readers 3 times.

Hey HART,
I still don’t know what the problem was but I uninstalled and reinstalled WordPress and it seems to be fine now.
I do have a plugin for backups, but it backed up the bad version I had, so I still had to go throught the whole process.
As far as “more” I finally fixed the problem I was having, quite simple actually. See today’s post to find out all the s*** I had to go through for a simple problem that shouln’t have been a problem in the first place.
Thanks for all the info, I have to look into some of them to see how they work.
