If anyone ever asks you what good is social bookmarking, you can refer them to this post.
Â
Yesterday, Ben Yoskovitz wrote an article, 5 Things You Shouldn’t Spend Money On When Starting a Business. It is a good, thoughtful article. There was a link to my Blog, not even by name, just “Go Home Office” as a reference.
As it turns out, someone Dugg (or is it Digged?) the post. As of last night Ben had over 10,000 hits, and I’m quite sure there were many more today. I think that even though the benefit may not be obvious to him yet, I think that the overall rewards will be forth coming.
Â
Let me explain…
With that one link, everything went through the roof here.
~~ PageViews went from an average of 50-75 per day (with the occasional spike)Â to almost 2,000 in two days (and the day is not over).
~~ All of the Header Links had numerous hits. This helped navigation here and to my other sites.
~~ My “links i like” list got quite a few clicks to other blogs I like. This may help them out a little.
~~ There were 89 (at last count) views for my Blog Carnival. I hope some actually joined.
~~ Navigation to older pages in the Archives went sky high.
~~ BlogTopSites went from 75 to 29 in the Internet Category.
~~ RSS Subscribers increased from 40 to 89 (over a 100% increase).
~~ Each of the Social Bookmarks at the bottom of the post had at least one hit. (I hope that’s a good omen).
~~ I got links from other Blogs that I’m sure would not have known about me otherwise.
Â
I never really thought too much about the usefulness of Social Bookmarking. I always just used the icons as a convience for my readers and hoped that they might share something I wrote with other people.
I can now see where the benefit is not just to the Blog that is being Bookmarked, but to others that are referred to, linked to, or otherwise listed as a source for additional information.
Working on the Internet is all about numbers. The more people who read an article, the more possibility of a return visit. When a Social Bookmark like Digg is used, MANY people see the referral. If it looks interesting to them, they will visit the site.
The effect can be quite good as long as the visitor trusts the first blog and their referrals, which leads to the second and their referrals, then the third and so on.
Â
I am a big proponent of Social Book Marking now. What do you think, have you seen anything like this on your site?

Joe, My company (GreatFX) was also featured in Ben’s post and traffic has skyrocketed, amounting to a one day traffic record yesterday. This single link has generated more traffic in 2 days than a non-solicted, featured product link from PCMagazine.com has over a 4 month period!
I’m new to the concept of social bookmarking but this has definately caught my attention… viral marketing at it’s best. Kudos to Ben for featuring our sites in his post.
Hey Chris,
I was so amazed at the result that the one link had, I have become an advocate of social bookmarking.
I put links at the bottom of posts for a couple of weeks, but never got a response like this.
I sent Ben an E-mail to thank him personally for the link since it helped me to this extent.
Don’t be a stranger around here. Stop by anytime.
Joe
Hey guys,
I’m as amazed at anyone at what’s happened. Personally I think some of the posts I’ve written after the “big one” are actually better – but people digg what they want to digg. That’s social media.
Of course now I’m addicted – so who will digg my future posts?
*smile*
Hey Ben,
You just never know what people really like until after they read it.
Some posts I thought were not really good, got the best responses. Others I thought would take off, crash landed.
Ya just never know…
Joe
