Beware: Rant Ahead…
Yesterday, I said I was taking the day off for Labor Day. Well, that’s not the way it worked out. Since I decided which Logo to use, I thought why not put it in the Head on the Forum. It should only take 5 minutes, right?
Wrong!!!
The Forum is phpBB which means it runs totally on Functions. This I understand. I logged in went to the files and proceeded to upload the Logo. No problem there. So, I went into the HTML Editor to add the pic. That’s when All of the Trouble Started…
Ok, on all of the other sites I use, if you go into the HTML Editor you can just add a .jpg or .gif file and that is all there is to it. Not with phpBB. You load the pic and save, Then you Lose Everything.
I looked for the Forum with IE6 and it blinked green and gave me a blank screen. Nothing, nada. This had happened to me when I first installed it, but I thought I remembered what I did wrong the first time and did it right this time. Well, I didn’t. I don’t know what made me look for it on FireFox, but when I accessed the Forum, I got most of the page with the look of the Editor (green and hazy and hard to read). But at least it worked enough to navigate through the site.
At that point I went to the Admin page and it was clean and looked normal. But when I went to log out, I got an error that said it could not access :2805/forum/template/:2805/forum/template. Now I know there is no such file, and I started to get upset, thinking I would lose the whole site.
That’s what happened the first time. I had to uninstall the forum and install it again. I lost everything I had done up to that point. Luckily, I didn’t have that much to lose, but it was a pain none the less. This time, I had everything set pretty much the way I wanted it. I already had members signed up and had a few posts already. I didn’t want to lose all of that.
Since I saw that everything worked in FireFox, I thought of a possibility. If I just installed a second instance of the forum in a different folder, I could copy and paste the Header file into the old header. That way I could save any additions like AdSense and the Link to the Blog.
Well that Did work. I got everything back to where I had it before I screwed up. Now I just had to get the Logo into the Head of the page, which is where I was a couple of hours before.
In going through all of this, I remembered how I got the other logo installed. This is probably not the way that the writers of the program intended for it to be done, but it works.
Find the folder that contains the logo_phpBB.gif file. It’s probably in somthing like /template/images. Upload the Logo gif to that folder. Now you just change the name of your New Uploaded file to logo_phpBB.gif. Overwrite the old file. Now when the Function calls for the Logo, it will be the New one you want to show.
If I would have just done that instead of trying to do something a little easier (and wrong), I would have saved a lot of time and a Really Big Headache.
Have you had a similar experience? How did you handle it?

Hi Joe ~
If you need help with your phpbb forum I’d be happy to see if there are some tips I can lend ya.
Were you able to figure out that it was the overall header and footer that allow you to change the top and bottom of your forum so that no matter which page you are on the information is there?
You can see what I’ve done with the header and footer of my awareness forum here:
http://yoshi2me.com/phpbb/index.php
See if that helps you at all, ok?
Were you interested in doing a link exchange? I noticed that you had left a comment on my blog and I haven’t been able to get back to you until today. It’s been kinda crazy around here with the kids getting back in school and chasing after my little ones.
Look forward to hearing from ya!

Hey Angela,
Thanks for the offer, I did figure out the “overall header” “simple header” “admin header” etc.
It seems everything I do has to be done on the actual Edit feature, not the HTML Editor.
Oh well, it is still a work in progress.
Sure, if you want to exchange links, no problem. I just use a text link so that should be easy enough to add.
Look for your link later today in the links i like section in the sidebar.

What do you mean by the “edit feature” vs the “html editor” ??
I’ve got a link back to your blog. I’m going to be updating my side bar.
It seems I can never get to a point where I am just satisfied with how things look.
It must be the OCD in me!

Hey Angela,
The “edit feature” is where you have to go to change/add code. The “html editor” is more of a WYSIWYG set up.
I know what you mean about getting things the way you want them to look, I change or add things constantly.
For me they call it anal retentive.

I’ve been meaning to ask you if you wouldn’t mind helping me figure out how to add the cute little buttons like you have on your blog? The bookmark buttons? I’m going to sign up for that delicious site and see if I can figure out which code I’m supposed to use. Any tips for me on that part? Are there some bookmark sites that are better than others? Which ones do you actually use? Thanks so much!

Hey Angela,
Since I use WordPress, I just used a plugin to get a variety of services/icons that I like. Mostly delicious and digg.
You are using Blogger, so you probably have to sign up for each service and follow their procedures for adding it to your blog.
Good luck ontrying to get the links and services on Blogger, I had a hard time.
That’s is only one reason I switched to WP.

Let me ask you something.. did you take a blogspot blog and move it to word press? Also, where can I find this plug in for word press? Thanks!

Hey Angela,
Yes I did… I bought a domain and moved to WP all in one day. I just imported all of my posts from Blogger into WP and done.
Then you want to get various plug-ins to make life easier.
The plug-in for the Social Bookmarking is WP-Notable… http://www.calevans.com/view.php/page/notable
It is really easy to install and once you decide which bookmarks to use, you are done.
You can always find things I find for the self-employed on my Joes Freeware Finds Blog. I update that no less than once a week.
Hope that helps.
