Where to Draw the Line?

questionmark.jpg

I started asking myself some questions last night and started writing them down. This was never intended to be an actual post, more of things to think about, but I think they are good questions to ask if you intend to run a business on the internet.

Mostly they are reflective of how much you should think of yourself and your business.

~~ Is it stupid to put links for Job Opportunities without affiliate links in the sidebar?

~~ It gives people a place to look for work on the internet, but I get nothing out of it…

~~ Should I just put affiliate links to opportunities, or keep it the way it is?

~~ I AM in this to Make Money, just like everyone else.

~~ I am getting a lot of out-clicks on them, am I just sending people away?

~~ If someone finds something from the links, I doubt they will be back to visit once they get what they want.

~~ Where do I draw the line of being nice and making money?

I am trying to be useful and present useful information, but I need to think of myself as well, I only made $116 from adsense this week.

I actually made a decision in writing this… I am going to try to find affiliate programs for the referrals. I think that if I can help someone find a job or otherwise make a living on the internet, I should at least get a finders fee.

What do you think, am I being selfish? Should I leave the freebee’s there and hope someone is kind enough to come back and click a money link?

Personally I’d think $116 a week from AdSense would be pretty good. In 6 months I’ve managed to earn a whopping $10 – almost.

Oh, and they don’t pay out until the $100 threshold so I figure I might see a check in, oh, about 5 years.

Of course income production hasn’t been my first priority, but I still would like to see something a little better than that!

That’s why I decided to keep AdSense off of my new blog and look more toward sponsorship for a revenue source.

      Hey Chris,

I don’t mind adsense, I don’t have to figure out what ads work or not, they do that for me.

Even so, I’d like to expand without going overboard.

Besides, I haven’t found any affiliate programs for the opportunities list yet, but I’m still looking.

I say look for the affiliate programs. People on the web want for free stuff. Amibook, my PIM, is a case in point. I didn’t make a lot from it, but earlier this year I took the time limit out of it so it would continue to function after the the end of the evaluation period. Sales dropped to zip. That’s why I haven’t gotten back to you about putting a link here for it. I want to put the time limit back in it first, and haven’t had time to work on that. Don’t count on someone coming back and donating money in gratitude.

That said, I’m in a similar situation to Chris. Ads for making money must pay a lot more than ads for self improvement. I think you’re doing pretty good in terms of ad income for the amount of time this site has been up.

      Hey Rick,

Make sure you get that time limit back on your book soon, I’m looking forward to putting a link here. ;-)

I don’t expect anyone to click a link out of gratitude, it just won’t happen.

As far as the income, it is ok and getting better slowly, but I have to break even some day. I’m hoping to make it sooner rather than later.
