Helping You Run an Internet Home Business

When Not to Post: The Short List

Most people who work on the internet, whether it is a Business Page, WebSite or Blog will tell you it is advisable to post at least once a day -more if possible-.  I have always tried to keep to that rule of thumb.

Although there are no posts I “wish I never wrote”, there are those that are not up to the standards I have tried to adhere to since the beginning… useful, interesting,  and informative.  There are times I thought some entries would have better not been posted.

Some of those times where:

~~ When angry… This is much the same as in the 3-D world.  If you say or write something in anger, you could very easily regret ever saying anything at all.  It is better to just forgo posting until things settle down, at least a little.

~~ Off-Topic… When people decide to visit your site, it is usually because they know what to expect.  Even a person that found your site through one of the Search Engines expects to find something useful to them.  If you drift too far away from you main topic, you could easily lose readers and confuse your contextual advertisers in the process.

~~ Not Having All the Facts… Not long ago I wrote a post stating that a certain company had been instrumental in my starting an Online Business.  Although I never made any money, I did get some good ideas.  Shortly after,  I began getting comments and E-mails from people affiliated with that same company complaining they never got paid or were “ripped-off”.  I didn’t have to write a retraction because what I wrote was true, but had I investigated further I probably would not have written so highly about them.

~~ Nothing to Write About… This sounds like a no-brainer, but too often I have just written something for the sake of having something out there.  As my Mother always said, “If you don’t have anything good to say, say nothing at all.”  That could be expanded into “If you have nothing to say, say nothing”.  If there is nothing to write, then skip a day, it’s not the end of the world.

This post started out as a non-post.  I was thinking about having nothing new to write about, then said to myself: “Self, there has to be more…”  So, I decided to write about things I probably should not have posted rather than something not up to snuff, and this was the results.

What else can you add to the list, when do you think it is better to post nothing at all?
